We are now into the outdoor season and with that come
certain risks. One of those is Lyme disease. The highest risk areas are
the northeastern, mid-Atlantic, upper north-central regions and several
counties in northwestern California. As summer is also the time for
vacations and traveling, this information is pertinent for everyone. . .

Act Your Age (or Younger)
By Jean Gifford, R.N.
How many times have you heard someone say, "For
goodness sake, act you age"? We say it to our children when they are
acting in a babyish way and we say it to our elders if we think they are
acting too young. My concern today is with the latter—and unless a
person is making an utter fool of him- or herself, who are we to make a
judgment regarding someone else’s behavior?

Making Space
for Feminists
By Tony Campolo and Gordon
Aeschliman
Unfortunately, the rhetoric and
energy of the prolife movement is all too often directed against
feminists. Many circles operate on the assumption that to be feminist is
to desire the destruction of homes, of babies in the womb, of marriages
and even of the church. This view has developed largely because we are
not listening to others, not opening ourselves to the possibility that
we have much to learn from people who do not hold our convictions.

The Role of Alcohol
in our Lives
By Wilma Dickerson
Alcohol is one of the leading causes
of death in our country. The holiday season for some will have been a
time of year for parties and celebrations which many times have brought
increased exposure to alcohol. Some people will have used alcohol to
augment their celebrating and others to dull the pain that holiday
memories have brought. For this reason I thought it good to start
planting some seeds of thought for anyone who might have faced a problem
with drinking during the holidays.

An HIV Update The
Four Ages of AIDS
In observance of
World AIDS Day,
There have been some interesting developments in
the world of AIDS. AND there are some disheartening changes occurring also,
such as the rate of infection in some of the more underdeveloped countries
like those in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. The numbers of people becoming
infected in these countries are still very high. Availability of education,
testing and treatment is very limited and only those who can afford to pay
for these services are able to access them.

US Religious Leaders Divided Over Bush’s Stem Cell
Decision
President George W. Bush has received both praise and criticism
from US religious leaders for his decision to allow limited federal
funding for embryonic stem cell research.
In his first televised address to the nation since being sworn
in as president in January, Bush said he would permit federal funding
for research for a reported 60 "lines" of stem cells already created
from embryos.
He also supported funding for non-embryonic stem cell research,
such as on cells derived from adults. But he refused to allow federal
funding for research that would result in any further "harvesting" of
stem cells from tens of thousands of embryos now frozen at US fertility
clinics.
