This anthology, Light at the edge of
Darkness, opens new genres of Christian fiction for today’s demanding
reader. Whether you prefer allegories, coming of age, drama,
evangelistic, fantasy, horror, science fiction, supernatural, or time
travel you will find a short story here for your reading pleasure.
Readers will find in this anthology a wide
range of writing styles and genres; many the general population doesn’t
realize are out there. I found some new personal favorite authors as
well.
My personal favorite from this anthology
would have to be Fumbleblot’s Task by Deborah Cullins-Smith. A new
Christian, Gretchen is a character that many of us can relate to. Raised
by a superstitious grandparent, Gretchen’s every waking moment is
dominated by fear rather than peace she so desperately wants. Suffering
from the subliminal persecution of Fumbleblot, whose devilish mission is
to frighten Gretchen so severely she will renounce her newfound faith.
Then, if she should die, surely Satan would give Fumbleblot bonus points
and a position of favor by the masters side. Deborah Cullins-Smith is a
name I will be keeping an eye out for on the supernatural fiction shelves
as well as recommend her work to my favorite local head-librarian.
An anthology such as this will most likely
find willing buyers when stocked in small bookstores where regular
customers are more likely to purchase a book they would never have chosen
from a large bookstore. Librarians, whether you buy for public or school
libraries, take the opportunity to consider this anthology as a new
addition, recommending it to those frequent guests always looking for
something new – you know who they are. I would also recommend this book
to all those churches whose libraries are open to their congregation.
There is no substitute for God’s word but these stories offer insight
into the lives of fictional others that maybe, just maybe, might have an
unexpected positive impact on their own.
Whether you teach creative writing to high
school students or are a young reader who hasn’t decided yet what genre
is your favorite you will find ample variety to choose from within in
this anthology. I foresee storytellers will find exciting adventures
within these pages with which to captivate audiences and to open the door
to the greater population who would otherwise never know Christian
fiction could be about something other than ancient history.
There will always be large groups in our
American culture who will seek out anything remotely religion oriented,
regardless of whose Faith, to drag through the vilest of mud with their
self-righteous anti-religion. They no doubt would tear this anthology to
pieces. Nevertheless, remember your history – the greater the persecution
of the Christian church the greater the number of those coming to Christ.
Please note that not all stories are for
every audience, use discretion.
