Let Justice Roll Down was a very
graphic, and frankly, very disturbing account of the life of John
Perkins. Rev. Perkins grew up in the deep south, in a time and
place where racism was a major aspect of life. This book describes
both the murder of his brother, by a white deputy marshal, and very
graphic beatings of both Reverend Perkins and his friends.
Rev. Perkins realized from a young age
how wrong racism is, and knew that he wanted to put an end to
it. God's presence in his life allowed him to see past the anger,
and the feelings of revenge and hatred, and view the situation
through Christ's eyes. He became a minister, and sought God's
direction in stopping segregation, and trying to set this world
where it should be, with equality for everyone. Throughout this
fight, he maintained a love for people, and always remained focused
in love.
For those that can handle reading vivid
descriptions of injustice, this book is truly eye-opening. I was
actually sick to my stomach, and pained, reading about what people
can do, in the name of "justice". Rev. Perkins' outlook, and the
ways he used to help all involved, black and white, is an amazing
testimony to God and His love. An excerpt from the book reads like
this, "The problem is spiritual: black or white, we all need to be
born again. It's a profound, mysterious truth- Jesus' concept of
love overpowering hate. I may not see its victory in my
lifetime. But I know it's true. I know it's true, because it
happened to me. On that bed, full of bruises and stitches- God made
it true in me. He washed my hatred away and replaced it with a love
for the white man in rural Mississippi. I felt strong
again. Stronger than ever. What doesn't destroy me makes me
stronger. I know it's true. Because it happened to me."
Rev. Perkins did SO much work, it's
hard to list it all here. It seemed that he found a need, and found
a way to fill it. He shared the gospel, started ministries and
schools, got housing and medical care for those that needed it. He
walked with the Lord, and saw people receive the Lord, education,
better jobs, food, and medical treatments. The innumerable lives
that were touched as a result of this man is amazing.
