In this book the writers discuss
several key elements in both personal and congregational worship. Many of
them share some of their own experiences that have accompanied their call
in to the music ministry. Each individual writer has their own unique, God
given perspective, giving inspirational insight to the numerous ways our
Lord moves through Spirit led worship.
Louie Giglio writes about the
importance of being thoroughly grounded in the Word of God as a lead
worshiper. This is not only essential for spiritual nourishment; worship
leaders have a responsibility to feed their flocks as well. He added that
worship and the Word of God are inseparable, and there is a distinct
connection between the two. He referred to a couple of different passages
of Scripture, one being the first few verses in John’s Gospel. Most of us
know these verses that speak of how Jesus is the Word that became flesh,
and that he has been since the dawn of creation. Therefore, since our
worship should be Christ centered, we must continually draw from the
Scriptures. Another passage he brings us too is Psalm 119. He mentions
that this is the longest chapter in Scripture, focusing on the solid
foundation the Psalmist has in God’s word.
Chris Jack talks about how little
reference there is to corporate worship services in the New Testament.
Although he points out a number of verses that instruct us in the many
aspects of worship, such as prayer, confession, offerings, and music, there
is simply no reference to a structured worship service. He is convinced
that this is no mistake on God’s part, but in perfect line with His purpose
for the Church. He believes His intentions are that our services would be
led by the Holy Spirit, therefore leaving room for flexibility and
creativity.
Another inspiring contribution to
this book was written by Robin Mark. He shares an encouraging testimony of
how the Lord called him out of secure employment, to starting his own
business as a noise and acoustic consultant. He talks about the certainty
he felt that this was God’s call, and how the experience was used to
prepare him for the future. His words give true meaning to the idea that
worship goes far beyond music, but rather it is a lifestyle that all
Christians should practice continually. He also spoke of the benefits that
come with being self employed while in the music ministry part time. He
strongly emphasized that regardless of the call; go with it, as long as
it’s God’s call.
Matt Redman has done an
incredible job putting together this heart felt and inspirational
compilation of “Worship Leading Essentials.” Both men and women have
clearly devoted much time and prayer to this project, bringing a fresh
insight to the word worship. Through testimonies, experiences and ideas of
the authors, this book speaks to lead worshipers, and average Christians
with a desire to move in to deeper fellowship with God.
