Society’s definition of a successful business man is constantly becoming
more and more secularized… money, prestige, power and position, are
becoming the heart’s motivation, instead of honesty, integrity and
diligence. As society gives us a picture of what a ‘business man should
be’, Non-Christian and Christian men, alike, are feeling the pull to
conform. Is it possible to start and run a business that has Christian
integrity? Is it possible for a business to thrive and grow, without
stooping down to the level of immorality where more and more companies are
headed? Do businessmen need the same type of ministry that laymen need?
Do businessmen really need God? How does a businessman run a business
and relate to his employees in a way that’s pleasing to God? Doing
Business with John, was written in an attempt to answer these
questions.
E.L.
Parker, author of Doing Business with John, has allegorically taken
principals from Jesus’ interaction with His disciples, in the book of John,
and applied them to the business world. Mr. Parker takes us through the
many facets of Jesus’ ministry, from choosing each disciple, training them,
encouraging and motivation them, to preparing them to continue on in
ministry once He left earth. E.L. Parker walks us through each step that
Jesus took, helps us understand some of the how and why of what Jesus did,
and then relates it to something similar in the business world.
Mr.
Parker speaks humbly, giving not only personal experience, but also giving
brief testimony of successful businessmen who’ve started/run their
businesses with God’s principals, instead of the worlds. He shows us how
God has lead these men in each step of their business, from advertising, to
employee relationships, to having a high quality product, etc. He also
gives examples of how God has richly blessed the businesses who have upheld
Christian integrity, and how many of them are well-known and still growing
today.
Doing Business with John,
masterfully shows us how a business man can run a business that depicts
Christ in a way that will draw people… from the very foundational beginning
of the business to how to keep it running smoothly. He gives examples and
suggestions on non-integrity decisions and companies, and how begin a
process of changing the company. To glean as much as possible, it’s best to
read the corresponding chapter in John, prior to reading in Doing
Business with John, to get a better idea of the context of passages
being referred to. This is the type of reading where you read a few pages,
and then take the time to really evaluate if you’re living by the same
principals. Therefore, this is a book written for those who are: thinking
of starting a new business, currently building a business, managers,
employee’s, and churches who want to reach out and support/minister to
those above.
