Peace Studies as Vocation

WWYD? What Will You Do?

by Dean J. Johnson

"Blessed are the peacemakers..."  Matthew 5:9.*

What Will You Do?

In a world that all too often uses violence to resolve conflict, Jesus left us with these words. "Blessed are the peacemakers..." Matthew 5:9. What do these words mean for Christian living? What do these words mean for Christian vocation? If Christians take seriously Jesus as a model for how they live their life, then what types of jobs and careers are appropriate? We are now a part of a global community where what we do in our daily lives impacts others around the world. What one decides to do for a living can have implications for the entire global society. So, what will you do? more

My Journey of Faith

by Matt Dillon

At the age of thirteen I said a little prayer.  My best friend was spending the night at my mom’s house and we were staying up late, watching TV, when we somehow got on the subject of God.  He asked me if I had been saved and I replied, What the heck are you talking about?  His Dad had been through a difficult marriage that ended in divorce.  On top of that, his older sister became ill and unexpectedly died.  To say the least, his family had seen some hard times and his Dad had found relief through God.  He had attended the same church as his father.  Learning about God from this church, He learned how to become saved.  Now I don’t know if he understood what he was talking but I knew I sure didn’t. He tried to explain to me that if I was sorry for the bad things I had done in my life and asked Jesus Christ to come into my heart, I too would be saved.  more

Can you follow this one?

Three people check into a hotel. They pay $30 to the manager and go to their room. The manager finds out that the room rate is $25 and gives $5 to the bellboy to return. On the way to the room the bellboy reasons that $5 would be difficult to share among three people so he pockets $2 and gives $1 to each person. Now each person paid $10 and got back $1. So they paid $9 each, totaling $27. The bellboy has $2, totaling $29. Where is the remaining dollar?  The Answer

Reduce Violence by Celebrating Diversity

by Craig Mauger

Melting Pot is a description of our country, but the pot boils over in rage and segregation. These kinds of situations occur in the workplace, on the street, for the nation to view, and in America's schools.

Diversity in Richmond, Indiana, schools is evident. Walking down the hallways one will experience all races. Black, White, Asian, Mexican, and all others are represented here. Because of this, school is an obvious place for racial tensions to flare.

YOUNG ADULT MISSIONARIES SENT FORTH BY UNITED METHODISTS

Seventeen young adult United Methodists were commissioned in early August for short-term missionary service. The worship service capped the 50th Anniversary celebration, from August 2 to 5, 2001, of the United Methodist Church’s "US-2" program. Held in Birmingham, Alabama, the service was presided over by Bishop Robert F. Fannin of the North Alabama Area.

The program, sponsored by the church’s General Board of Global Ministries, places young adult missionaries in two-year ministry positions across the U.S. More than 1,300 young adults between the ages of 20 and 30 have served in U.S.-based programs as US-2s since the program’s inception in 1951. According to a spokesperson, "the program allows young men and women to answer the gospel call to service and to develop leadership skills." The names, home conferences and places of assignment of the 2001-2003 class of missionaries are posted on the website of the General Board of Global Ministries, www.gbgm-umc.org.

INSTILLING KINDNESS

LEADS TO PEACE

by Eric Wooldridge

In his speech at last year’s graduation ceremony for Wake Forest University, John T. Chambers, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Cisco Systems, stated, " When things are going well, it is the most important time to make changes." This statement was made with reference to technology, but it is remarkably applicable in today’s high school environment with reference to peace.

I currently enjoy a high school environment where violence is rare, intimidation is scarce, and racial tension is low. I’ve never known a student who brought a weapon to school  more

"Relatively", by Sterling Franklin

Time for class, I am ready for the test,
Got my pencil, gonna do my very best.
Studied a bit, but I will ace this exam,
I'll be a true genius, which is just what I am.

Question number one - What color is the sky above?
The Sky?  That has flying things like sparrows and doves,
It may be blue to some, but I want to be sly,
To me, relatively, GREEN is the color of the sky.

Question number two - What is two plus two?
I know that the typical answer of four is true,
But true to you may not be true to me,
So relatively, two plus two is SEVEN, that's how I see.

Question number three - What is a tree?
I could say that it's a brown plant with branches and
leaves,
But who cares about normal, I want to be strange,
Relatively, a tree is a western song like "Home on the Range."

Question number four - Who was the first American
President?
I was dead at the time, and at the time, I wasn't a
resident.
I know it was Washington, but I think for myself,
Relatively, dear teacher, #1 was Lawrence Welk.

Last question - number five - What is your name?
Oh, come on now, teacher, is this some kind of game?
It's a gimme, but I don't care, I want to be a dork,
For this question, relatively, my name is now Fork.

Three days after the test, she hands it to me,
It had a ton of red marks, Graded fully and completely,
I was stunned at her comments, her cutting remarks,
They totally shocked me, from out of the dark!

"I know you knew the answers, you were saying them out loud,
You changed them, however, to be different from the crowd. Relativism doesn't work, and functions as a pitiful song.
Your answers were not RELATIVELY, but ABSOLUTELY Wrong!"

Grade?  F!

Focus on People with AIDS

By Tony Campolo and Gordon Aeschliman

It’s tough enough to have a debilitating sickness that will kill you in the near future. Add to that the stigma of leprosy and sin and your life becomes a hell. This is the reality of hundreds of thousands of Americans who are dying because of AIDS.*  more

Focus on the Oppressed

from 50 Ways You Can be Pro-Life

by Tony Campolo and Gordon Aeschliman

God has called the church to demonstrate a special concern for those who are being unjustly treated. Many times in the Old Testament we read how God intends to punish the people of Israel because they oppress the poor. God looks upon those who are "bullied" by others in the same way a parent looks upon his or her child who is being pushed around by the school bully. And it should not surprise us. The Scriptures tell us that we were conceived in love. We are the children of God. And he is a God of great compassion toward the oppressed---but great anger toward the oppressor. read more

HELPING TROUBLED STUDENTS

TO STAY IN SCHOOL

By Michael Vierck

As I enter Richmond High School at 7:42 A.M. on April 11, 2001, I look around. I see students, a lot of students. I don't know many of these students, I don’t know where they live, and I don’t know their family situations. However, I know this: Many of these students are troubled and many are probably going to drop out of school. Every school has troubled students; we see examples in the news everyday. The question is,  more
