Church Destroyed in WTC Collapse

A tiny Christian Church was one of the neighboring buildings buried in the debris of the collapsing south tower of the World Trade Center on September 11. St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church was located at 155 Cedar St., only 500 feet from "ground zero."

The building, constructed around 1832, and converted to a church in 1916, had a capacity of only about 50 worshippers. The four-story structure measured about 21’ by 56’. It was used not only for Divine Liturgy on Sundays, but was also open for contemplation or prayer at lunchtime on Wednesdays.

The church’s icons of St. Nicholas, St. Katherine, and St. Sava were gifts of the last czar of Russia, Nicholas II. The pastor of the congregation, Father John Romas, had expressed hope that the relics would be recovered, but nothing had been found by the end of September.

Parishioners are seeking to continue services in the area in temporary quarters and hope to rebuild their church. In late September the town of Bari, Italy, announced that they will give $500,000 toward rebuilding the church. The town considers St. Nicholas to be their patron saint and sponsors an annual festival on his feast day of December 6. The Orthodox community of Baltimore is pledging $10,000.

Donations to help rebuild St. Nicholas Church may be deposited to account number 09062602 at Atlantic Bank, 8010 5th Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11209.
