Today’s society
puts all the focus on me. All the emphasis is directed at myself. Why
would I go out of my way to help others? Why would I waste my time to do
something nice for someone else? In the secular world it doesn’t make much
sense. In the Christian world we do it because Christ commanded us to.
The book is very
small, but includes some good information. The book gives the why, what,
who, where, when, and the how much. It gives plenty of ideas on serving.
Bray mentions that
we should serve others without expecting anything in return. We shouldn’t
look for anything to come from it. If we do it ceases to be service. Even
if we do it so we feel better about ourselves it is not service. Bray also
points out that we should use our God given abilities to serve our
neighbors. We should use our talents to help others.
Bray teaches that
you don’t have to travel a long ways to see people in need. You merely
have to cross the street to find someone who can be served. Needy people
are all around we just need to open our eyes.
Lastly Bray
explains that everyone is our neighbor. He gives nobody an excuse with
this one. Everyone should be out serving someone. It should be a priority
to serve others regularly. Whether other believers or the lost it is
important to serve often.
The only negative
aspect about the book is that the author has no religious training
whatsoever. He is a professor at Blackburn College in the Department of
Biology. A doctorate in Biology doesn’t exactly equate to a degree in
Christian studies. Can the average Christian write a solid book on
Christian Living? Can someone without any experience in Christian studies
write about theological things? You as a reader have to answer these
questions. Answering these questions will determine whether this book
would be good for you or not.
